The 3 Square Appeal.

I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly. Therefore I’ve decided to launch this 3 square appeal. I am asking everyone especially during the season of goodwill even though it’s a very busy time, PLEASE spare a thought for the Children of the Syrian refugees and if you could knit just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn’t be too great.
There are 13 refugee camps in Turkey and soon to be 3 more, the number of Syrian refugees here at the moment stands at 137,000 and almost half that number are children. The temperatures in that region are at the moment around 10 degrees C during the day and down to around 3 deg C night time but this is just the start of the winter and temperatures will soon drop and snow is forecast.

Please if you could just knit or crochet 3 x 8inch squares, pop them in an envelope and send them to the address at the bottom of this page, we will sew them together to make blankets and a child with nothing will get a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Help Wrap A Child In Love !

Winter is the perfect time for knitting so why not knit for a good cause?
Knit a square and help wrap a child in love.

There are more than 126,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey, all have fled from the violence of Syria’s civil war. Many of the refugees are children who have seen violence themselves.

So let’s try and send them a little comfort and the knowledge that someone is thinking of them.

Please consider making a square or two with your odds and ends. Any spare wool you have can be knitted into eight inch squares and then we’ll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Knitting Instructions

FOR ONE 8″/20 cms SQUARE, you will need:
Yarn from a 100 gram (3.5 oz) ball of yarn or scraps of yarn
worsted weight , double knit or 8ply

Size 4mm needles  6 (USA)
A yarn sewing needle.
Cast on 32 stitches (try to make your stitches neither too loose nor too tight to help ensure uniform squares)
 Row 1: knit
Row 2: knit. These two rows form the ‘garter’ stitch knitting pattern for your square but you use any stitch you prefer, beascreative as you like. Continue knitting  until you have knitted a square
To ensure you square is 8″/20cm either use a tape measure .

 Cast off
Use your yarn sewing needle to sew in all the yarn ends using a darning method

VERY IMPORTANT
Leave a one metre length of your yarn attached to your work after you have cast off. This will be used to join the squares together.
but if you’re changing colors work in your other tails.  DO NOT TIE AND CUT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE KNOT, THAT IS GUARANTEED TO COME UNDONE.  Knot if you want, but leave a tail and work in your ends.

Knit A Square – Help Warm A Child!

More than 126,000 Syrians have registered with the Turkish government as refugees – part of the 440,000 registered refugees who have fled to countries that are Syria’s neighbors.  Most of the displaced people in the camps are children. All have fled the violence of Syria’s civil war. Many have seen violence themselves. Some have lost relatives, and most have trouble sleeping and panic when they hear loud noises or airplanes.
We expect the situation to get worse when winter hits, lowering temperatures and sending rains that could turn the camps into a muddy bog.

So let’s try and send them a little comfort and the knowledge that someone is thinking of them. Please keep the squares and blankets coming!

‘Lily’ Visits An Orphanage

Last week I went along with volunteers from the Humanitarian Relief Foundation to visit an orphanage in Kayseri, Turkey. The orphanage is home to 140 orphans aged between 3 and 14 yrs old, mainly from Turkey but some from Iraq.
I took along with me hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, to help keep them warm in the winter months, Lily bears and other soft toys plus lots of sweeties, cakes and biscuits all donated by ‘Lily’s’ wonderful supporters.

The weather was warm and sunny so we were able to have fun outdoors. We went along to the Marina in Kayseri and had game of football and other sports, follwed by a picnic and entertainment by a magican.

We had such a good time it was lovely to see the children enjoying themselves and hearing their laughter.

The Children loved their gifts.  A big big thank you for all your hard work! There will be lots more photos posted on our facebook page over the next couple of days.

Your help is really appreciated.

Your participation is importantin sending thismessage of hope, the thought that someone cares, and that this beautiful, handmade blanket was created especially for them. It doesn’t really matter what it looks like: even the most basic knitted blanket patterns will yield perfect results – a smile.

Help us Knit Squares For Syrian refugees!

Help us Knit Squares For Syrian refugees!

A total of 1,043 Syrians made their way to Turkey in a single day, marking the highest figure in recent times. Currently, the Turkish government has set up nine locations including eight tented camps and a “container city” in Kilis, some 150 kilometers (95 miles) east of the Hatay camps, to deal with the influx.

Our Volunteers Are Awesome!

It’s just one week since we launched ‘Lily’ – Love In the Language of Yarn.
Our first assignment is to help provide blankets for the Syrian refugees in Turkey.
As we are a small and new organisation we set a target of 100 blankets and put out a plea for knit or crocheted  8inch squares which will then be sewn together to form blankets. The response has been awesome! This week we have had :

 A donation of 12 x 100grm of knittin yarn.

10 completed blankets

150 knit and crocheted squares

promises of squares from Austrailia, UK, Turkey, Germany and US  and 46 followers on Facebook.

                          A Big Thankyou!

Knit for Syrian Refugees

The number of Syrian fleeing violence to Turkey has reached 16 thousand.  The Red Crescent has already sent additional truckloads of tents and logistical support to the region to accommodate the new refugees.

The Red Crescent currently operates seven camps in Hatay. There is another 10,000-person camp under construction in Kilis, composed of containers where people will have kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets in the unit. Healthcare and all the basic needs — including food three times a day — are provided.

You can help too by helping ‘Lily’ Love In the Language of Yarn send blankets to help keep the refugees warm and add a little comfort.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
We are a newly formed non profit organisation and at the moment a small group of knitters. Our goal is to send 100 blankets to the Humanitarian Relief Foundation to be given to Syrian refugees.
Can you spare a little of you time to knit or crochet an 8inch square or maybe two or three? In most countries you can send up to three squares for the same cost as one,3 squares should be accepted as a standard international letter rate.

So that we can acknowledge receipt of the squares, write your name and return address on the back of the envelope or include a note in your parcel. Email dbjones5559@hotmail.co.uk for the postal address. You can also find us on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/LilyLoveInTheLanguageOfYarn

Knit A Square For Syria

Knit a Square For Syria.
Please consider making a square or two with your odds and ends. It’s a great way to bust your stash. The squares will be joined to form blankets and  given to IHH- Humanitarian Relief Foundation to be taken to Syrian refugees in Turkey. Turkey has seven camps housing more than 13,000 Syrians, seeking to protect refugees from President Bashar al-Assad’s intelligence agents as they flee the violence  Turkey has been housing Syrians escaping the violence in tent camps close to the border in Hatay province, where at least 1000 people sought refuge just in the last 24 hrs and has seen an increased influx of Syrians crossing the border in their hundreds every day to flee the violence.

‘Lily’ – Love In the Language of Yarn has been asked to help provide blankets especially for the many children refugees.

It is a lot of fun and immensely satisfying making blankets. It is a good way to use up scraps of wool and different effects can be achieved with colours and by using different stitches. Your gift of a handmade blanket will bring comfort and warmth to Syrian people especially children who continue to suffer from oppression and war. Your lovingly made gift will send a message of concern and hope to these refugees. Your participation is important.!
